Zaha Hadid Architects Set To Transform East Naples With Striking Towers & Industrial Sites

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled designs for a striking duo of towers. These structures, characterized by a futuristic, swooping combination of glass and metal, will ascend from a shared foundation, offering vistas of a nearby volcano. Appropriately dubbed, the Napoli Porta Est Masterplan is set to be developed in Naples, Italy. Emerging victorious in an architecture competition, the project centers around these towers, which will be constructed using concrete and steel. Their unique design features an extended base that links them, incorporating greenery and a plaza area.

Currently, there is no specific information available regarding the expected height of the towers.  But from the architectural renderings, they appear to be significantly sized high-rise structures. While they certainly give an impression of grandeur, they are not anticipated to reach the scale of towering supertall skyscrapers. As previously mentioned, the design will prioritize optimizing views of the picturesque surrounding landscape, which includes the famed nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius. The towers are also designed to maximize natural light, ensuring well-lit interiors that enhance the overall ambiance.

“The envelope optimizes natural elements – light, wind and panoramic views – ensuring excellent thermal insulation, reducing solar load and glare, without compromising the spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius and the surrounding hills,” said ZHA. “The facade design takes into account the movement of the sun throughout the day: north-facing openings are maximized to allow natural light to enter the buildings and enhance the views, while direct sun exposure is minimized on other facades of the buildings to reduce energy requirements.”

The broader master plan is set to breathe new life into a section of eastern Naples, focusing on revitalizing over 30 hectares (74 acres) of neglected industrial sites, including a disused tobacco factory. This ambitious redevelopment project aims to transform these areas into vibrant, functional spaces that contribute positively to the community and environment.

A key component of the plan is the incorporation of expansive green roof areas, which will enhance the aesthetic appeal and contribute to environmental sustainability by improving air quality and providing natural insulation. The project will include a substantial 7,000-square-meter (approximately 75,000-square-foot) array of solar panels. This solar installation is designed to significantly reduce reliance on grid-based electricity, promoting cleaner energy use and lowering the carbon footprint of the area.

By utilizing recycled water for irrigation purposes, the development aims to decrease potable water consumption by an estimated 60%. This approach demonstrates a commitment to sustainable water management practices, essential in preserving natural resources. The plan also integrates geothermal energy, although specific details on how this will be implemented have yet to be disclosed.
