I love it when a designer stops taking something for granted. A chair doesn’t HAVE to have four static legs. It could use three, maybe five, maybe ten. Maybe the legs could bend and fold. Similarly, a wine glass is almost an institution at this point – taken for granted to a point where nobody’s ever thought of changing it, apart from slightly modifying its shape. Italy-based Trebonn decided to give the wine glass its most radical change ever – by making the stem of the glass removable, replaceable, and magnetic.
Created by a trio of a father and his two sons, Trebonn’s ‘Splitglass’ is a unique take on wine glasses that’s quirky, modular, and dares to be different in a sea of boring-looking glasses. Each glass comes with the cup itself, and a stem that attaches to its base via powerful magnets. This unique approach achieves 3 things – it gives you the ability to easily store/wash/maintain your glasses without them occupying too much space in the dishwasher or cabinet, it turns your glass into modular drinkware that lets you swap the cup on top for three options – wide, normal, and flute (for red, white, and sparkling wine), and finally, it extends the modularity to the base too, allowing you to customize the opaque stem by choosing a color that fits the mood/decor.

A wine glass is a prime example of form following function. The size of the cup and its rim are directly proportional to how much aeration the wine requires and how much aroma plays a part in the drinking experience. The stem, on the other hand, helps give elegance to the glass while allowing you to hold it in a way that prevents your hand’s warmth from affecting the wine inside. It’s perfect in every way, except it’s pretty unstable, and it’s difficult to store or maintain. The Splitglass changes that.
The Splitglass retains everything that’s great about wine glasses, but brings an element of fun and utility to the design. As its name suggests, the glass splits into two, with the stem and cup being two independent units that can be joined using a powerful magnet. The reason is equal parts convenience, and fun. Each Splitglass comes with the option of multiple cup shapes, and multiple stem colors, allowing you to efficiently store them when not in use, and mix-and-match them when you need to break out the crystalware.
The cups are made of lead-free crystal glass – they’re thin, as you expect crystal drinkware to be, giving the drinkware an elevated experience. You can get them in three shapes – a big one for red wine, a smaller one for white wine, and a slim and tall highball cup for sparkling wine. The Splitglass set allows you to practically own three different types of glasses simply by owning the three cups and one stem, allowing you to snap them on just before pouring yourself a drink, or even using the cups independently given that their flat bases allow you to sit them on tabletops without having them tip over.
The stems come with an opaque, colorful design, adding a pop to your tabletop. You can get them in as many as 4 colors, which means you can either theme the glassware to your decor, match the color of your drink, or even color-code them so you know which glass belongs to which guest. It’s a uniquely joyful approach that traditional glasses don’t consider, making the Splitglass both fun as well as functional.
Finally, the modular design makes storage and even washing up extremely easy. The glass height gets cut in half, thanks to the removable stems, allowing you to store them in tighter shelves without worrying about vertical clearance. Keep the stems inside the glass when not in use, or stow them away separately. Washing the glasses is easier too, since the detachable stem makes it easy to place the cups in a dishwasher. You don’t have to be delicate or careful of knocking over anything or accidentally breaking something too, since the stem doesn’t get in the way while you load or unload the dishwashwer.
A 2-person set of Splitglasses starts at €44 EUR ($48 USD), and you can choose which cup design you want – red, white, or highball. Alternatively, if you want the complete set with all three cup designs, it starts at €80 EUR ($86 USD) for a two-person set. The Splitglasses are designed and made in Italy, and ship globally starting May 2025.
